What is gland packing?

Gland packing is a type of seal used in the industry to prevent fluid leaks in equipment such as valves, pumps, and shafts. The flexibility of the materials and their adjustability make gland packings suitable for a wide range of applications in the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food, and energy industries.

Gland packing is placed in a space between two moving or stationary parts to create a mechanical seal. It can be adjusted to control the fluid flow and compensate for wear, making it a versatile solution for maintaining tightness. Its effectiveness depends on the proper selection of material, packing design, correct installation, and regular maintenance.

What materials are JIOrings' gland packings made of?

Each material and combination has specific properties that make them suitable for different industrial applications, depending on the needs for chemical resistance, thermal resistance, pressure, and other operating conditions:

  • PTFE gland packing: Gland packings made of PTFE are ideal for applications requiring high resistance to corrosive chemicals, solvents, and acids. Moreover, PTFE has a very low coefficient of friction, which minimizes wear in dynamic applications.
  • COTTON + TALLOW gland packing: This combination of natural cotton fibers impregnated with tallow (an animal fat) offers good lubrication and flexibility. They are suitable for low-pressure and temperature applications, mainly in general industry where aggressive substances are not handled. Tallow provides lubricating properties and improves the sealing capability of the packing.
  • COTTON + TALLOW with RED FERROUS gland packing: Similar to the previous one, this material adds red iron oxide to the mix, improving heat resistance and providing antifriction properties. This addition makes the packing more resistant and suitable for applications requiring higher thermal resistance compared to cotton impregnated only with tallow.
  • EXPANDED GRAPHITE + INCONEL WIRE gland packing: This combination offers exceptional resistance to high temperatures and is compatible with almost all chemical media, thanks to expanded graphite. The incorporation of Inconel wire, a nickel-chromium alloy, provides mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance, making these packings ideal for extreme applications, such as in the petrochemical industry or power plants.
  • PTFE + ARAMID YARN gland packing: The combination of PTFE with aramid fiber (a highly resistant and durable material) offers excellent chemical and mechanical resistance. Aramids, known for their resistance to high temperatures and durability, complement PTFE for applications where both chemical resistance and the ability to withstand high pressures and friction are required.
  • RAMIE + PTFE gland packing: Ramie, a natural fiber, combined with PTFE, offers a gland packing with good chemical resistance and sealing properties enhanced by the lubricity of PTFE. This combination is effective in applications requiring moderate chemical resistance and good sealing properties, being a more eco-friendly option due to the use of natural fibers.
