JIOrings’ floating seals
Description and operationo
Floatings GARSEALS take part of the mechanical seals family. In English, there are a few different ways to call them: floating seals, mechanical face seals, duo cone seals, toric seals or heavy duty seals..
They are composed of two independent metal parts and two elastomer energizing rings. During its operation, one of the two metal parts rotates while the other remains still. As a whole, the metal parts interact to achieve optimal contact perpendicular to the axis, guaranteeing perfect sealing. For their part, the elastomeric gaskets generate a uniform axial frontal load thanks to their elasticity and act both inside and outside as a static gasket.
Among the many advantages of GARSEALS, its exceptional sealing capacity against the entry of dirt, dust, water and abrasive agents from the outside and oil and/or grease from the inside stands out. In addition, it is a long-lasting product, easy to assemble and maintain, and highly resistant to corrosion and wear.
Materials
Metal parts are made of high alloy cast iron in a Rockwell hardness value of HRC 60-69. Recommended serving temperatures are between -50 and +200 ºC. It is extremely important to correctly choose the material to be used in each application as it greatly influences the tightness. We offer two types of materials for GARSEALS.

Under regular working conditions, elastomeric gaskets with a hardness of 65 Shore A (+/- 5) have a tensile strength of at least 12 MPa and an elongation at break of at least 300%. At 100 ºC and after immersion in oil, the elasticity changes in a range of +/- 5º while the compression set is less than 12%.
The correct choice of the elastomeric gasket material is essential to guarantee the right temperature and pressure conditions for each application. We provide four different rubbers for GARSEALS.

Oil lubrication
Oil lubrication significantly expands the field of applications relative to peripheral speed due to its ability to transfer heat away from the sealing area. Transmission oils such as SAE80 or SAE90 are particularly suited for typical face seal operations.
If necessary, thinner oils such as 20W-20 can also be used. The oil level after filling should be between the axis centreline and two-thirds of the seal diametre. If this is done correctly, there will generally be enough oil for the seal lifetime without any maintenance need.
Grease lubrication
In applications with low sliding speed, the GARSEAL can be lubricated with grease. Above 1 m / s, we recommend to take advice. If the internal seal cavity is not ventilated, it should never be filled by a grease gun as the high pressure from the gun can displace the elastomer gaskets causing leakage.
