D-Ring seals, designed to put an end to "spiral failure" in rotary applications
D-Rings are rings in the shape of a “D” that offer an alternative sealing solution to O-rings for use in rotary applications. They provide the same sealing properties as O-rings and can, in addition, be used in applications that experience high and low pressures, operating in a wide range of temperatures.
The strength of a seal in rotary applications may be a determining factor when choosing the most suitable seal. In this type of situation, O-Rings can suffer from a tendency to be extruded, which can cause leaks and, in some cases, lead to the failure of the seal. If you wish to avoid this specific risk, a D-Ring is the perfect choice.
D-ring seals can be easily fitted to standard housings. The flat geometry of the base of the “D”-shaped ring avoids the “seal twisting” or rolling, eliminating the possibility of a spiral failure that frequently would otherwise commonly occur when O-rings are used in rotary applications.
In low-pressure applications, the combination of a material with a low modulus and a reduced cross-section helps to reduce friction. In high-pressure applications, in contrast, the friction can be reduced by selecting a higher modulus material with a reduced coefficient of friction.
D-Rings can be manufactured in accordance with DIN11851 and are available in a range of materials (NBR, FPM, EPDM Peroxide and VMQ). Since they are aseptic seals or hygienic seals, they are designed for sensitive industries, such as the pharmaceutical or food industries, where hygiene is a crucial factor.
D-Ring Seals, advantages
These are some of the most significant advantages of D-Ring seals:
- They provide greater resistance to stress and wear.
- They withstand compression.
- They have a longer operating life, which reduces costs.
- They are easy to install. Furthermore, due to the ‘D’ shape, being higher at the end, the probability of the seal being damaged during installation in a critical area is lower.
- The design of the D-ring prevents the seal from being extruded from its housing.
