What are Back-Up Rings?
The Back-Up Ring (BUR) are support rings designed to prevent the extrusion of O-rings in systems subjected to high pressure. They act as a reinforcement barrier, preventing the O-rings from deforming or shifting, which ensures effective sealing and extends the system's lifespan. They are especially useful in applications that handle pressure changes, extreme temperatures, or vibrations.
How are BUR installed?
The anti-extrusion rings are usually installed alongside the O-ring. In single-direction pressure applications, they are placed on the side opposite to the direction of pressure, while in double-acting systems, two BUR are used, one on each side of the O-ring. There are different configurations based on the design: solid Back-Up Rings and split Back-Up Rings in spiral or C shapes. It is essential to ensure that the BUR is properly aligned with the O-ring for effective sealing.
Types of anti-extrusion rings available at JIOrings
At JIOrings, we stock two types of BUR:
- NBR BUR: Made of nitrile rubber (NBR), these rings are highly resistant to oils and fuels, making them ideal for applications with moderate pressures and operating temperatures typical of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Spiral PTFE BUR: The spiral polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Back-Up Rings offer excellent resistance to extreme temperatures, aggressive chemicals, and high pressures. Their spiral design facilitates installation, allowing some flexibility in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
Applications of support rings
Back-Up Rings are used in applications where seals are subjected to high pressures or forces that could cause extrusion, such as in:
- Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders
- High-pressure valves and systems
- Industrial pumps and compressors
- Brake systems and heavy machinery
- Aerospace and automotive industries, where extreme conditions demand efficient and durable sealing.
These rings help maintain the integrity of seals, reducing wear and extending the system's lifespan.
The Back-Up Rings are also known by other valid names:
- Anti-extrusion rings: describing their ability to prevent seal extrusion under high pressure.
- Support rings: due to their supporting function in seals and gaskets.
- Backup rings: a common term referring to their role in reinforcing sealing in critical applications.
- BUR: an abbreviation widely used in the industry.
These names reflect their primary function in sealing applications. Call them as you prefer, but buy them at JIOrings.
