Garseals | Profile | Material | Temperature |
With O-Ring | NBR 40% + Chromium molybdenum alloy | -25 to +90 °C ºC |
GARSEALS are part of the mechanical seals and are known under many different names: floating seals, mechanical face seals, duo cone seals, toric seals or heavy duty seals.
They are composed of two independent metallic parts and two elastomer energizing rings. During operation, one of the two metal parts rotates while the other remains still. Together, the metallic parts interact to achieve optimum perpendicular contact with the shaft, ensuring a perfect sealing. The elastomer seals generate a uniform axial front load thanks to their elasticity and act both internally and externally as a static seal.

At regular operating temperatures, 65Sh A Duro elastomeric rings has a minimum tensile strength of 12 MPa and a minimum 300% elongation at break. At 100ºC and after immersion in oil, elasticity changes in the range of 5 degrees while compression set is inferior to 12%.
It is compulsory to choose accurately the rings material according to temperature and pressure workings conditions of every single applicaction. Four types of materials are available:
Temperature | Main content | Pressure resistance | Tear resistance | Reaction with oil | |
NBR | -25 to +90 °C | 40% NBR | Average | Average | < 2% |
High nitrile NBR | -35 to +120 °C | 60% NBR | Good | Good | < 1% |
HNBR | -40 to +160 °C | 60% HNBR | Excellent | Excellent | < 0,5% |
VMQ | -50 to +200 °C | 40% VMQ | Average | Average | > 2% |
Oil lubrication significantly increases the fields of application with respect to peripheral speed due to its ability to transfer heat away from the sealing zone. Transmission oils such as SAE80 or SAE90 are particularly suited for typical face sealing operations. If necessary, thinner oils such as 20W-20 can also be used. The oil level after filling should be between the shaft centerline and two-thirds of the oil seal diameter. If this operation is carried out correctly, there will generally be enough oil for the entire life of the oil seal without the need for maintenance.
In applications with low sliding velocity, lubrication of the GARSEAL oil seal can be done with grease. Above 1 m/s, we advise to consult. If the internal seal cavity is not ventilated, it should never be filled by a grease gun as the high pressure of the gun may displace the elastomer seals causing leakage.
