WASHERS

The primary function of rubber washers is to create a seal and prevent leaks or friction between two surfaces. They are an excellent alternative to O-Rings and/or X-rings as they often improve the sealing efficiency. They are commonly used to create a tight seal between two connected components but can also provide electrical insulation between two connected surfaces. And last but not least, washers can help absorb vibrations, shocks, or impacts, reducing the risk of damage to the connected components and serve as a barrier between two different metals, helping to prevent galvanic corrosion.

There are different manufacturing processes to produce washers:

  • By injection or compression moulding (especially cost-effective for mass productions)
  • By Lathe cuttting (often used when precision and narrow tolerances are required)
  • By die-cutting
  • By water-jet cutting

The most common materials are EPDM, NBR and FPM but washers can be produced in any other elastomers such as VMQ, HNBR, CR, FFKM, etc... as well as in approved compounds for food (FDA, 1935/2004, NSF51), drinking water (UBA, WRAS, ACS, KIWA, EN681-1, NSF61) or gas (EN649).

For special requirements, other materials like PU, TPU or PTFE can be a very effective in specific applications.

ADVANTAGES

  • No twisting in the groove
  • No need for additional back-up ring
  • Long shelf life
  • Good resistance to extrusion, wear and abrasion
  • Low cross-section mechanical deformation

APPLICATIONS

Any application in which an O-ring can be replaced like flanges, valves, cylinders, plates or locks.

SIZES - ISO 7089

There is no chart of standard sizes since any size can be manufactured according to the needs. However, we present below some sizes as an example:

  • Washers according to ISO 7089 standard
  • Washers for fittings
